Leadership: What White Power Should Be

A Ragtag Daily Word Prompt

Watching the coverage of George Floyd’s murder, I wonder what I can do to make a difference. I rant about the senselessness of this man’s death, the brutality inflicted by the police, the injustice that sees black folks arrested for looting while white male murderers walk free.

I wonder what black folks think of us railing against the system from our perch of white privilege. We are outraged, we share the posts, we use #blacklivesmatter and then we go back to making dinner, doing housework or walking the dog.

It’s so easy to forget what they’re going through and what they’ve lost. We have no idea what it is like to live in fear for our lives. Never knowing if this is the day we cross the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time. We can’t remember because we don’t know.

So what can we do? We can step up, take some leadership and use our white privilege for good. We can stop staying silent when we hear racial jokes and slurs. We can take a stand.

When white folks stand up to white folks it makes a difference. I don’t know who was on the sidewalk watching and speaking out as George Floyd was murdered, but I bet they weren’t white.

If the protest was predominately white, would the powers-that-be feel the pressure? I think they would. White people don’t need to be in a position of power because their privilege is their power. It’s time we stepped off our perch and started using our power for good. Black folks are literally dying to have their voices heard while we do nothing. We can make a difference. So will we? Will we do something or stay silent and look away, again.
