Stranger in the Shadows

A Ragtag Daily Word Prompt

I felt his eyes on me before I saw him, partially hidden in the shadows. His beady eyes and aquiline nose lent itself to a hawkish visage that struck fear into all who gazed upon it. The unblinking predatory stare seemed to look into my very soul searching for weakness. I felt shaky. Would it be brave or foolish to look away? I did not know.

My timid heart beat so loud in my chest I felt the thumping in my ears. Frozen in place, I gulped for courage I did not possess and returned his stare. In his menacing presence I could not run or look away. I dared not break his gaze.

I feared that if I looked away he would be upon me in instant. Like a carnivore patiently waiting for the right moment to attack its prey. Pouncing with lightning speed, a violent flurry of teeth and claws, blood and flesh.

As I steadied myself for the onslaught I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Slowly I looked up to discover that he was gone, vanishing into the darkness as if he was never there.

For the briefest moment relief washed over me and then with dawning horror I sensed he was standing at my back. Feasting on my fear, he waited for me to turn around.

In a moment of false bravado I twirled around and discovered that I stood face to face with the darkness. I frantically tried to catch sight of him, but only the night looked back. Turning, fear compelled me to run as fast and as far away as possible. As I ran, beady eyes watched from the shadows and slowly blinked.
