Empathy for all God’s Creatures

Definition of empathy

1: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

I had a mouse in my mouse. Actually, as it turns out, I had three. There are a lot of options out there for getting rid of mice, but for me there was only one option – a catch and release trap. My empathy for all of God’s creatures runs deep.

Along with mice I’ve had the occasional fly, a few wasps that flew in last summer, and spiders that live here all year long. I won’t kill them. I’ll shoo them out the door or cover them with a glass and take them outside.

Some people might think this behaviour is pathological and maybe it is, but I love this about me. I’m not alone. Knowing I’m not alone gives me hope that all of us make the world a better place.

We’re the people who move snails and worms of the sidewalk. We stop for injured animals and wait until the SPCA shows up. We’re the ones who bring home strays. We look out for the kids on our streets, help the elderly, and offer a helping hand to anyone who needs it. We believe in random acts of kindness.

Random acts of kindness have a ripple effect and hopefully one act of kindness leads to another and another and so on… Kindness is contagious.

Everyone is motivated in different ways to be kind and giving. I do it to honour my heavenly Father. I lay my empathy at His feet and pray that He will work through me as an example of His love. When I extend love to all of God’s creatures, great and small, I feel His love fill me.
