Stay Calm and Carry On

A Ragtag Daily Prompt

The hysteria is overwhelming. I didn’t think it would reach my small town until I walked into Shoppers Drug Mart and saw that the toilet paper supply was dwindling. This is real.

I felt guilty for buying toilet paper even though I was down to the last roll. I only bought one package. I’m sure it will last until the panic settles down.

While everyone panics I wonder about the ripple effect. How many people will lose their jobs? Will small businesses close? Will the economy come to a screeching halt?

I think about the effects this is already having on everyone and everything. People are fist-fighting over toilet paper. Others are buying up Lysol wipes and selling them at exorbitant prices. We are starting to see the dark side of humanity.

As I wonder what exactly is going on I remember the flu. The flu is an incurable illness. Like Covid-19 it targets the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Covid-19 seems to spare the young. The flu doesn’t.

In Canada, the flu kills about 3500 people a year. We expect to get it. Flu is just a part of life. I don’t make any changes to my lifestyle when flu season starts. I don’t avoid being in public and I don’t hoard toilet paper.

With this in mind I will not let the panic take over. I will be careful, but I won’t be fearful. I will stay calm and carry on.
